Hickman High School Theatre Course Offerings
Acting 1--8216FA
(Grades: 9-12, Credit: 1)
This course offers students an opportunity to investigate and develop a sound foundation of acting skills and techniques. By participating in improvisational drama, play reading and discussions, monologues and structured duet and group acting scenes, students will focus on developing meaningful characterizations. Students will also examine aspects of dramatic criticism. Representative literary sources from the classics to contemporary plays will be selected for study and performance. Students are required to attend at least one live performance outside of school per quarter.

Prerequisite: Grade C or better in Acting 1 or Musical Productions class or permission of instructor.
This course is designed for the junior or senior interested in the total creative experience of staging, performing and publicizing theatrical productions. In addition to examining and applying varied acting techniques, students will investigate such theatrical skills as interpretation, analysis, cutting, blocking, and staging. Published sources will include plays representative of a variety of different theatrical styles. Public presentations include a scene recital and a full length play. Group rehearsal time outside of the school day is required.
Prerequisite: Grade C or better in Acting 1 or Musical Productions class or permission of instructor.

Directing Practicum--8218FA
(Grades: 11-12 Credit 1/2)
Prerequisite: Permission of the practices instructor-petition into the class-limit of six students per spring semester working on an extracurricular basis. Course is NOT offered in the fall.
Students taking this semester-long course will choose, direct, and present a one-act play using high school students as actor. Working with the instructor, the student will read plays and select one for presentation, analyse the script for artistic and technical details, conduct auditions, organize and conduct rehearsals, and finally present the play for public performance. The play will be evaluated by a panel of three qualified adults.

This course provides basic study in theatre, including the basics of vocal technique, character development, staging, and dance. Musical Productions 1 will spend a large portion of the spring semester in the actual production of a musical in conjunction with Musical Productions 2 and 3. Out-of-class rehearsal and performances will be required.

This course is a continuation of Musical Productions 1. The study of the history of musical theatre is a significant component of this course. Learn to design, construct, and manage scene sets for theatre productions. Students will learn the basics of designing theatre sets, and they will learn how to safely use construction tools when building sets. Students will participate in the construction of scene sets for various school plays and musicals will have the opportunity to be members of actual technical crews for plays and musicals.

Students who enjoyed successful participation in Theatre Technology 1 and still desire additional stage set construction activities should enroll in Theatre Technology 2. In addition to further development of leadership and problem-solving activities, in-depth creative activities in set construction, props, lighting, and sound will be stressed.
